Catching Fire – 3

Describe three positive and three negative character traits of the main character in your book. Explain these character traits in several sentences.

In addition to your comment, reply to at least one other person’s comment.

I would say Katniss Everdeen’s three main traits are courage, intellect and determined .Katniss has courage because she is the key player in the rebellion against the Capitol and President Snow.
She has intellect because in the arena she teamed up with the right people. She also found a way to heal the damage from the gas in the jungle in the Games. Katniss was determined to keep Peeta alive during the Quarter Quell Games.

I would say that Katniss’ negative traits are stubborness, hatred, and despairity. Katniss has a good amount stubbornness…. its either her way or the highway. She also has a great deal of hatred for the Gamemakers, Hunger Games, President Snow and of course, Haymitch. Despair is definitely in the picture with Katniss because she has almost given up all hope on the Hunger Games, Peeta, Her Family and everyone she loves… even her life.

    • I agree with you when you say that Katniss has a lot of courage because that is what I saw in her too. She has the courage to go back into the Hunger Games for a second time, bu this time it is with all of the victors.

But I don’t agree with you about the hatred thing. Yes, she does have hatred for the Gamemakers,Hunger Games, and President Snow. But that is not a bad thing . . . at all! Heck I would hate them if that happened to me too. She doesn’t show hatred to any one else except for them.

    • I agree with you 100%. Katniss is very stubborn and that can be a very negative character trait at times. I also agree with you when you said that one of her positive character traits was determined. Katniss is always determined to survive and stay alive, and also keeping her own family safe when necessary. I disagree with you, though, when you said that one of her negative character traits was hatred towards the Hunger Games and the Capitol. This hatred that is boiling up inside actually fuels her to stay alive and keep going because she wants her family to be safe.

    • I really agree with everything you say, like mostly the positives! I think that as you say she hates Haymitch i kind of dissagree,. It is like a love hate realationship because he holds her of the ground and keeps her alive and she knows how smart he is but sometimes he does things she doesnt like and with her stuberness she does not like that.

      Comment by Bakerlou1 — January 28, 2011 @ 8:16 am

    • I agree with you but I think that Katniss doesn’t show intellect by healing the Gas damage. She was just wadding in the ocean and she found out that it healed her. But it does show some intellect that she did notice that.

    • I agree that Katniss is very stubborn because she always feels like she is right and doesn’t ever want to accept that she isn’t always going to be. I also feel that she is despairing(?) because of the Hunger Games. I don’t feel that this is a bad trait because it is normal to not like everything.

  2. In the book “Catching Fire” the main character is a teenage girl named Katniss. One of the positive character traits that Katniss has is courage. In my opinion, it takes a lot of courage to be in the Hunger Games. Another way she shows courage is when she sticks up to the Capitol about all of the crap that they are putting her through.

Katniss also has the positive character trait of love. She loves her family and Gale. She tries to show love to her mom especially. Towards the beginning of the book it says that Katniss was trying to be extra nice to her mom and let her handle all of the money that Katniss got for her prize. Later on in the book, she shows that she love Gale when she jumps infront of him while he was being whipped by the peacekeeper. She felt bad that he had to go through all of that pain just because of her.

Lastly, I would describe her as intelligent. She shows the audience that she is intelligent during the previous Hunger Games. She kind of made friends with people so that they woudln’t kill, but then in the end it was time to let them go.

One of the three negative character traits that Katniss has is being cranky. Sometime when she doesn’t get what she wants, she gets ticked off. Another negative character trait is that she is competitive. I don’t that being competitive is a good thing because that can lead to having the attitude of it’s all about me me me! I WANT TO WIN! The last negative character trait is pitty. I think that she feels bad for herself too much. Although she has been through a lot of things that I never would have been able to handle, she needs to stop having pitty for herself and just deal with it!

    • I agree with the traits you gave Katniss here. I mostly agree with the negative trait you gave her as being pity because I have seen it in the book a lot too.

      • I agree with the character trait that she has of love. I mainly agree with the fact that she tries to show she loves her mom especially. Since the accident with her father, they really have grown apart. But now she realizes that she needs her mom in her life and wants to fix their relationship.

  3. Katniss Everdeen is the main character in this book and she has some positive and negative character traits. One positive trait is that she is sly and witty. She has shown this trait numerous times in the games and her most recent act was when she hung a dummy of Seneca Crane right in the Gamemakers face just to show how witty she can be. Another positive trait is that she shows great perseverance in whatever she is doing. Whenever she is stuck in a tight situation she never just gives up, but instead perseveres to stay alive.

Katniss also has some negative character traits. Like sometimes she can be too shy when meeting new people and also she tends to act before thinking sometimes which gets her into trouble.

    Comment by YouthZO6 — January 27, 2011 @ 7:23 pm

    • Sly could be a negative trait, if she couldn’t stop lying. And normally, when she meets someone new, she’s not shy, just untrusting.

  4. The three positive character traits that Katniss has is that she is loving, bold, and caring. She is loving because she loves Peeta and Gale and even though Peeta and her isn’t really a real couple she still loves in a friendly way to him. She is loving about Gale because she has known him for many years and fallen in love over the years. Katniss is bold because she can stand up to the capitol and not be afraid but mad oddly. Lastly of her positive character traits she is caring because she cares for the people in the arena even though she might have to kill them for her to win the games. Also she cares about Peeta and Gale even though she loves Gale but has to marry Peeta and treats them as though she doesn’t have to marry Peeta.
The three negative character traits of Katniss is that she can be aggressive, a little to curious, and hurtful. She is aggressive because she thinks to the injury side before she thinks about the person and understand what they want. Katniss is a little too curious because the saying “Curiosity killed the cat.” Can be true sometimes. She becomes too curious in the book a lot and barges in to the moment. She can be hurt to the people around her and it makes the relationship with the person have a weak bonding.

    Comment by YouthFS6 — January 27, 2011 @ 7:44 pm

    • I agree with you on the three negatives. She shows all three of those traits at least once in every chapter. I would say the curiousity comes up the most though.

  5. One positive character trait that Katniss has is determination. She is determined to do whatever it takes to keep her family and loved ones safe. She is even determined to keep Peeta alive in the arena when it will cost her her life. Another positive character trait that Katniss has is selflessness. She really only cares about keeping other people safe and healthy. She breaks the law to feed herself, her family, and the starving people in her district. She even will lose her life just to keep Peeta alive. A last positive character trait that Katniss has is courage. She volunteers herself in her sisters place, being brave enough to go into the games. She is brave enough to risk her life to hunt, and to do what she did in the private session with the Gamemakers.

A negative character trait that Katniss has is her stubbornness. She wants to do things her way and won’t change her mind very easily. Another negative character trait that Katniss portrays is dishonesty. She doesn’t show this often, but sometimes she keeps the truth from Peeta, or her family. She thinks this will keep them safe but really it hurts their feelings. Lastly, a negative character trait that Katniss has is being quixotic. She sometimes acts on her impulses too much, which can get her into trouble. For example, in the jungle when she hears Prim’s screams, she doesn’t even think, she justs runs to it, which sends her into pain, hearing all her loved ones cries of pain.

  6. I think Katniss has many good character traits. She Sticks up for what she believes in. She wont let anyone mess with her family. No one is going to take attvantage of her. Not even hunger as she is capable of taking care of everyone she loves. She is also very brave by the things she does in and out of the game. Some of these can also turn into bad charactor traits. She sticks up for her and her family a little too much as she will get in lots of trouble. She also breaks down a lot and is not a very good liar. She couldnt convince people her and peeta were in love and even though she didnt give up she was crying a lot. She is also very stubbornand whenever anyone tries to get her to do anything she mostly didn ‘t want to. With this trait comes bossyness. She really wants things her way and convinces people no matter what. Other than this she cares for the people she loves, can hunt and is kind when she must be.

  7. Three positive character traits of Katniss is that she’s a good leader. She is good in real life situations. She is great in the battle field. Three negative character traits of Katniss are that she freaks out when things go wrong. She is terrible on camera acting. Finally, she has to learn that everybody looks up to her and she has to play her role. Those are three positive and negative aspects of Katniss.

    Comment by YouthAS1 — January 28, 2011 @ 8:18 am

    • I think you are right about her fighting capabilitys but she is no leader what so ever. She must look to others for support and often depends on peeta to do much of the work, talking, acting, ect. But to say she is good in real life stuiations is only true because those are the only situation sshe is put in!

      Comment by YouthCG7 — March 29, 2011 @ 10:23 pm

  8. A positive character trait of Katniss is how she is able to keep going because when Mags died, her and Peeta kept moving away from the fog. Another positive trait is her determination because she is determined to keep Peeta alive in the 75th Hunger Games. The third positive trait is her courage because she is courageous for going into the Hunger Games a second time. Some negative character traits are her dishonesty, her inability to speak publically, and her stubborness. She is dishonest because she is lying to all of Panem about her love for Peeta. She is stuborn because she doesn’t often change her mind. Lastly she is unable to speak publically because she isn’t quite sure what to say.

    Comment by BakerKW1 — January 28, 2011 @ 8:24 am

  9. Katniss Everdeen is a complex character. She’s very caring, as she would willing sacrifice herself for Peeta or Prim. She’s also resourceful, making use of whatever she has around her. For instance, when she bandaged Beetee with the moss. Finally, she’s very good at fighting, not only with bows, but with knives too.

She does have some bad traits. She’s very impulsive, like when she ran to the jabberjay imitating Prim. Sometimes she has a breakdown, when she heard she was going back to the Games. And she has trouble trusting people, because she wanted to kill Finnick even when he was her best hope.

    Comment by YouthJS7 — January 31, 2011 @ 2:44 pm

  10. Katniss Everdeen is very courageous. No matter what she keeps going and is never doubting herself. She is also very caring and loving because even though sometimes she is only acting she kisses Peeta although sometimes she isn’t acting and she really loves him. She is also very giving because she gives back to Peeta what he gave to her, her life. All through the Games she is trying to keep Peeta alive because she feels like she owes him something.
Katniss also has trust issues because she feels like she can’t trust anyone since she can’t even trust her own government. She is very stubborn because she likes to do things her way only. She is last but not least argumentative because she feels like she is always right.

    Comment by YouthAK7 — March 4, 2011 @ 3:48 pm

  11. I think that katniss dosent have practaly any positive traits. She is selfish and uncaring soul that will put hatrid that she doesent have agenst family menbers and dear friends that care about her very much. Yet when these friends choose to show some compation she just turns it down and insults them. She is an unloving person and it would be wrong to say that there is anything positve about her.
